Local Chippy Wins Prestigious Good Food Award

Portlands Fish & Chips, a beloved local favourite located on Sefton Street, is thrilled to announce its win of the distinguished Good Chippy Award at this year’s Good Food Awards.

Recognizing the finest fish and chips across the UK, the coveted Blue Ribbon award is given based on customer nominations and highlights excellence in food quality, service, and community commitment.

Having been under new ownership since February 2023, Portlands Fish & Chips has flourished under the leadership of Mubinul Hoque and his dedicated team, who have passionately worked to elevate the Portlands experience. From an innovative new menu to sustainable practices, the team is committed to bringing top-quality meals to the Liverpool community. “Our customers tell us that they come back week after week for our homemade batter, which they describe as addictive,” says owner Mubinul Hoque. “We’ve also introduced new menu items including our fresh fried fish burger, fish goujons, and combo platters, tailored especially to the lunchtime crowd from nearby businesses.”

Portlands’ commitment to high-quality, inclusive dining is evident in their extensive menu offerings and sustainable practices. Serving fresh fish from Fleetwood, eco-friendly packaging, and 100% vegetable oil for halal, vegan, and allergy-friendly meals, Portlands sets a high standard in every aspect of its operations. The team even operates a separate gluten-free fryer, making their iconic fish and chips accessible to gluten-sensitive customers all week long.

Established in 2002, The Good Food Awards rely on customer feedback and stringent food hygiene standards to select their winners, celebrating culinary excellence across the UK. “We celebrate top-notch food, service, and value, basing our awards on what matters most: customer opinion. By using customer feedback, online reviews, and votes, we ensure our awards reflect genuine dining experiences.”

In addition to perfecting traditional chippy staples, Portlands is redefining what it means to be a local chip shop. Situated between two gyms, Mubinul has incorporated lighter fare like Salt ’n’ Pepper Squid, Tempura Prawns, and a Fish Burger topped with fresh salad to cater to the fitness-conscious crowd. “We’re proud to serve delicious, health-conscious options that cater to everyone, from local gym-goers to families enjoying a meal together,” he adds. Portlands also supports the community in other ways, including sponsoring the local Nicosia Juniors football team, with whom they share the benefits of incorporating seafood into a healthy diet.

By partnering with local suppliers, Portlands helps bolster Liverpool’s economy and promote sustainable business practices. Bread is sourced from a bakery less than three miles away, and all waste oil is repurposed as biofuel, with potato skins going toward fertilizer and animal feed.

Portlands Fish & Chips, open seven days a week, is grateful for this recognition by the Good Food Awards and their loyal customers, who have made this honour possible.
