Liverpool’s GPO Food Market has suddenly closed its doors this week, surprising customer and staff alike.
Opened in 2021, GPO quickly gained recognition as the city’s largest food hall, hosting a variety of international vendors serving Indian, Japanese, Venezuelan, and Greek cuisine, among others.
Located near The Everyman Cinema on the upper floor of The Metquarter, GPO’s name honoured the building’s history as Liverpool’s former General Post Office
The closure came without notice, and the market’s online presence including website and social media have been taken down. Local reports indicate that nearby shops were among the first to notice the sudden shutdown, as the space has remained dark during business hours since early November 2024.
While the exact reasons for the abrupt closure have not been disclosed, GPO’s departure leaves a void in the Metquarter’s offerings, particularly for those who enjoyed its vibrant mix of cuisines.
