Liverpool’s food scene is about to welcome a unique addition, with the opening of Gulf House Restaurant. Located in Tradewind Square, just off Duke Street, Gulf House promises to transport diners straight to a 1970s souk in Dubai with its immersive Middle Eastern experience.
Designed with authenticity in mind, Gulf House features terracotta mud-effect walls, Arabic script decor, and handwoven rugs and furniture, recreating the vibrant atmosphere of a traditional Dubai market from half a century ago. While tables and chairs are available, guests are also invited to embrace tradition by removing their shoes and dining seated on the floor, all while listening to the soulful sounds of Arabian music.
The restaurant’s team is excited to introduce what they describe as the UK’s first dining experience of its kind. “We’ve recreated the magic of the Middle East, offering diners the chance to step into a world far from Liverpool,” says a Gulf House spokesperson. “It’s more than a meal – it’s an experience. People are looking for that now, and we’re thrilled to bring it to life.”
For those curious about what Dubai was like before its modern skyline of high-rises and luxury brands, Gulf House offers a nostalgic glimpse into the past. “Our design reflects a 1970s souk, complete with the sights, sounds, and smells of freshly-cooked Middle Eastern dishes and spices,” the spokesperson explains.
The authenticity extends to the kitchen, where Gulf House chefs, each with over 30 years of experience in Khaliji (Gulf) cuisine, craft traditional dishes using spices imported directly from Yemen. Diners can look forward to specialties like Lamb Fahsah, a shredded lamb stew served with naan; Chicken Mandi, a bone-in chicken cooked with Mandi spices and served with rice, salad, and a spicy yogurt sauce; and clay oven-roasted salmon fillets marinated in a unique blend of spices.
The menu is designed for sharing, with large plates encouraging communal dining, a staple of Middle Eastern culture. “We’ve kept our prices affordable so everyone can enjoy the experience,” says the spokesperson. For larger groups, the restaurant even offers a whole lamb served on a bed of rice for £290, perfect for sharing among 15 people.
For those after something more casual, Gulf House also serves wraps and burgers with a Middle Eastern twist, as well as breakfast dishes like shakshuka, a flavorful mix of scrambled eggs, onions, tomatoes, and spices, and mugalgal, lamb cutlets cooked with cheese and vegetables.
“As the Arabic script on our walls says, we welcome everyone to sit, eat, and enjoy. We want people to feel at home here,” the spokesperson adds.
Gulf House is also set to expand with locations in Manchester and London in the pipeline for the near future.
Gulf House Restaurant Address: 74 Tradewind Square, Liverpool, L1 5BG. Open daily from 9am to 11pm.
