Liverpool’s Bold Street is set to welcome an exciting new addition this summer with the opening of Mee, a restaurant promising a vibrant and spicy Thai street food market experience.
Positioned opposite St Luke’s Bombed Out Church, Mee will occupy the former Jimmy’s building at the top of the bustling city centre street.
Owners Lee Chen and Mike Liu are currently overseeing renovations to transform the ground floor into a lively Thai-style market. In addition to this Thai-themed area, they plan to convert the upper floor into a Japanese-style street parade, offering authentic Japanese dishes.
Lee expressed enthusiasm for the project, saying, “Our restaurant is focused on Thai cuisine, and the ground floor decoration is Thai-style. In this area, there aren’t many Thai cuisine options. There’s Spice Thai near the dock area, but here there is not much, so we saw the opportunity to bring that spicy Thai cuisine to the heart of Liverpool City Centre.”
Mike added, “The ground floor will be a Thai restaurant, and we’re planning to open a Japanese restaurant upstairs. We’re aiming for a Thai street scene, with the ground floor like a Thailand street and the upstairs like a Japanese market. We want the customers to feel like they’re going to Asia.”
This venture marks the latest development for the Grade II-listed Havelock building, a site steeped in Liverpool’s musical history. Formerly home to the renowned Cabin Club, which inspired The Beatles’ song “Don’t Bother Me,” the venue closed in 2015. It was later revived as Jimmy’s in August 2019 before closing again last September due to post-COVID economic challenges.
Mee is currently hiring experienced Thai chefs, managers, and service staff in preparation for a soft launch in about six weeks, with the official opening set for around seven weeks from now.
Stay tuned for more updates as Mee brings a taste of Asia to Liverpool’s vibrant food scene this summer.
