The first week of March is British Pie Week, and in our book that means one of the most delicious weeks of the year! From March 4th pies will be firmly on the menu across the UK, culminating in the British Pie Awards on March 8th.
Savoury or sweet, vegan or gluten free, the humble pie has had a makeover in recent years, so grab your fork and dig in to these local independent bakers!
Homebaked
Imagine pies so good, someone wrote a musical about them… Welcome to Homebaked. Established by a group of local residents in 2012 this unique social enterprise started in the old Mitchell’s bakery in the shadow of Anfield’s Kop. To match day fans, it’s known simply as ‘The Pie Shop’ with specials including The Shankly and The Klopp amongst their menu, which also has won them gold and highly commended medals in the British Pie Awards. And the best news? They’re now delivering frozen pie selection boxed around the UK – order yours from their website https://www.homebakedbakery.com/
The Bread Shop
If you’ve never visited The Bread Shop on Aigburth Vale then you’re missing out on an institution. The bakery was established in 1958 by Len Gordon, and is now run by grandson Alan, and they’ve been known for producing quality pies and baked goods for over 65 years. Their tagline of “Terrible Food and Lousy Service since 1958” is testament to the Scouse sense of humour which is evident when you walk through the door – no matter how bad a day you’re having, a visit to The Bread Shop will always put a smile on your face!
Gluten Free Pie Co
The Gluten Free Pie Co first came about when founder Denise started making pies for herself and friends after they found it difficult to dine out due to allergies and intolerances. These Gluten Free, allergen friendly pies are all made using wholesome ingredients – and they also happen to be vegan! Our personal favourite is the Mushroom Bourgignon which is filled with chunky mushrooms in a beautiful red wine, garlic and thyme sauce – so good it’s won not one but TWO silver medals at the Great British Pie awards! Available at markets around the city or order online at https://www.glutenfreepiecompany.com/
Pullman Jack’s
Pullman Jack’s will be celebrating their 4th Birthday in March, and whilst they plan to close their shop in Crosby they’ll continue to supply their award-winning pies for collection on a pre-order basis. They’ve also built a range of twenty – yes TWENTY – different ‘Pie Celebration Boxes’ including the Mo Salah Box, Match Day Box and even a Mystery Box which you can order through their website https://pullmanjackskitchen.square.site/
Desserts by Dre
