As part of its centenary celebrations in 2024, Liverpool Cathedral will host a groundbreaking exhibition by internationally renowned sculptor Anish Kapoor.
Titled ‘Monadic Singularity,’ this marks the first time Kapoor has presented a solo exhibition in a UK cathedral, and it brings his extraordinary work to Liverpool for the first time in over four decades since his 1983 show at the Walker Art Gallery.
Kapoor, one of the most innovative and influential artists of our time, is celebrated for his iconic creations such as Cloud Gate in Chicago and the Orbit Tower in London. This landmark exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience Kapoor’s art within the spiritual setting of Liverpool Cathedral, the UK’s largest cathedral. Here, where life’s most significant moments are ritualized, Kapoor’s works invite profound reflection and awe.
Elisa Nocente, Head of Cultural Programme at Liverpool Cathedral and curator of the exhibition stated “It is an honour that Anish Kapoor has chosen to collaborate with Liverpool Cathedral in this landmark year. As one of the leading figures in contemporary art, he distinguishes himself by a unique visual language that embraces painting, sculpture, and architectural forms. Provoking both wonder and uneasiness, Kapoor’s artworks transcend their materiality; we hope that they will resonate on a deeply physical and emotional level for our audiences.”
The exhibition unfolds across various Cathedral spaces, with highlights including a large-scale installation in the Well—a powerful reminder of our earthly existence—and a striking wax sculpture in the Main Space. The works, many of which have never been seen in the UK, integrate seamlessly with the Cathedral’s gothic architecture, enhancing the spiritual and artistic experience.
Paul Smith, Director of Enterprise at Liverpool Cathedral added “In the last 5 or 6 years, we’ve worked very hard to bring an exciting array of cultural programming to the cathedral. For 2024, our centenary year, we wanted to take the programme up a notch or two and bring one of the world’s most significant contemporary artists here, to say a massive thank you to our worshippers and visitors.”
‘Monadic Singularity’ is not only a major event in Liverpool’s artistic calendar but also a significant moment for the city’s cultural heritage. To further enrich the experience, Liverpool Cathedral will offer exclusive late-night openings, featuring trips up the Tower and refreshments at the Welsford Bistro.
This exhibition is a centerpiece of Liverpool Cathedral’s centenary events, which also include a People’s Service in July, commemorating the 100th anniversary of its Consecration in 1924. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to engage with the work of one of the world’s most inspiring artists in a setting that amplifies its meaning and impact.
