UK Government to Ban Fast Food Packaging from October 2023

In a monumental step towards a greener future, the United Kingdom’s government has announced its plan to ban single-use fast food packaging starting from October 1st 2023.

The ban on these items will include:

  • online and over-the-counter sales and supply
  • items from new and existing stock
  • all types of single-use plastic, including biodegradable, compostable and recycled
  • items wholly or partly made from plastic, including coating or lining
  • items made from polystyrene (however you can still supply food or drink in polystyrene containers if it needs further preparation before it is consumed – for example microwaving or adding water)

If businesses continue to supply banned single-use plastics after October 1st, they could be fined and Local Authorities will carry out inspections to make sure the rules are being followed. If a business is found to be breaking the law, inspectors can also order them to cover the cost of the investigation.

Fast food packaging, known for its excessive use of single-use plastics, has long been a symbol of throwaway culture. The ban is expected to not only reduce the amount of plastic waste entering our environment but also encourage fast-food chains to adopt more eco-friendly alternatives as businesses are compelled to explore sustainable packaging options, such as compostable materials, biodegradable containers, and reusable packaging.

While the ban may initially pose challenges for fast-food businesses, it also presents opportunities for innovation and market leadership in eco-friendly packaging solutions. Customers, too, will play a crucial role by supporting businesses that embrace sustainable practices.

This bold move is part of the country’s commitment to combat environmental degradation and promote sustainable living. Environment secretary Thérèse Coffey said previously: “I am determined to drive forward action to tackle this issue head on. We’ve already taken major steps in recent years – but we know there is more to do, and we have again listened to the public’s calls. This new ban will have a huge impact to stop the pollution of billions of pieces of plastics and help to protect the natural environment for future generations.”
