That’s right… It’s McDonald’s, Jim, but not as we know it. The world’s first CosMc’s store opened this week in Bolingbrook, Illinois, and ten more are in the pipeline.
“Our universe is growing this week as McDonald’s starts testing CosMc’s, a new small-format, beverage-led concept that’s truly out of this world. Inspired by nostalgia and powered by a menu of bold, refreshing beverages and tasty treats, CosMc’s is landing earthside for us humans to enjoy.”
Pitched as McDonald’s answer to Starbucks, CosMc’s will focus “otherworldly” beverages and a small selection of food, including a few items from the McDonald’s menu. The stores will be smaller than traditional McDonald’s and the test store relies solely on the much-loved drive-thru lane to serve its customers.
McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski described the CosMc’s concept as “what would happen if a McDonald’s character from the 1980s that was part alien, part surfer, part robot opened a restaurant in 2023”
The concept stems from McDonald’s acknowledgment of growing demand for what they describe as an “afternoon beverage pick-me-up occasion”. Currently a $100 billion market in the US alone, this is a day part where McDonald’s doesn’t currently have a strong presence. The new chain will also allow the company to create customized beverages and seasonal specials that are difficult for existing McDonald’s restaurants to create.
The CosMc’s drinks menu promises to be creative, launching with Sour Cherry Energy Slush, Tropical Spiceade, and a S’mores Cold Brew. Customizations are also key to the new menu with popping boba, flavour syrups, energy and Vitamin C shots all making an appearance.
Food choices include a Spicy Queso Sandwich, Savory Hash Brown Bites and Pretzel Bites served with dipping sauces. Cookie Sundaes, McPops Donuts and Fudge Brownies also make an appearance.
But what this concept really brings is what we’ve all been wanting for the last two decades – all day Egg McMuffins. Finally, the dream comes true (well, for a small town in America anyway!)
CEO Chris Kempczinski hinted that if successful it could be expanded internationally. “It’s not worth our time to develop an idea that will only work in one market. This won’t work unless it can work across multiple markets.”
There are no current plans to open CosMc’s stores in the UK, however with a promise to “lift humans up with every sip” we’re sure it won’t be long until the concept is global.
